Andrey Cherkasov

A. Cherkasov

Andrey Cherkasov was born in 1957 in Moscow, Russia. Since childhood he has demonstrated great ability in art. He graduated from Moscow school of Art (painting) in 1976 and Surikov Academy of Art (murals and monumental art) in 1981. His accomplishments include number of mural and monumental projects using different technique in many cities of ex-USSR. Back in 1990, Andrey Cherkasov faced economic problems in the new Russian country which made him return to Ceramic. Soon he realized that Ceramic is the best place to expose his talent. Mr. Cherkasov has ever since participated in many group and solo exhibitions around the World. He lives currently in Moscow. He is the member of Union of Russian Artists.
Andrey Cherkasov is a distinguished artist whose work in ceramics and monumental art has left an indelible mark on Moscow cultural landscape. Known for his innovative approach and mastery of traditional techniques, Cherkasov combines the timeless beauty of ceramics with the grand scale and impact of monumental installations, creating works that resonate with history, emotion, and modernity. Cherkasov work is characterized by his ability to merge the intimate, handcrafted nature of ceramics with the grandeur and public engagement of monumental art. His ceramic pieces often feature intricate textures, vibrant glazes, and motifs inspired by Russian folklore, natural forms, and urban life. When scaled to monumental proportions, these elements gain new dimensions, transforming public spaces into immersive artistic experiences. One of his most celebrated projects is a series of ceramic murals adorning public buildings in Moscow. These murals not only beautify the urban environment but also tell stories of the city history and culture, bridging the gap between art and the community.
For Cherkasov, art is both a personal expression and a dialogue with the audience. He believes that ceramics, with its connection to earth and fire, carries a primal energy that speaks to human experience. By incorporating monumental scales, he aims to evoke a sense of awe and reflection, encouraging viewers to engage with art in both intimate and collective ways.
Every piece of clay has a story to tell, Cherkasov says. My role as an artist is to uncover that story and amplify it, whether it in a small ceramic bowl or a massive mural that dominates a city square.
Cherkasov contributions to the art world have earned him numerous accolades, including prestigious awards for innovation in ceramics and public art. His works are featured in galleries, museums, and public spaces across Russia and beyond, solidifying his reputation as a leading figure in contemporary ceramic and monumental art.
